Rushed into law in the immediacy of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, what is the Economic Crime (Transparency and Enforcement) Act 2022 all about?
The event held on 14 June at Aldgate Tower and co-hosted by Ince and London Barristers’ chambers, 25 Bedford Row, looked to answer these questions, and more:
1. What is new?
2. How have the existing powers of the CFA 2017 and SAMLA 2018 been amended?
3. What does this all mean for you and your clients?
4. Do the changes go far enough?
5. Are the changes a force for good?
6. What further legislative changes can we expect in the future?
7. Will this finally trigger the introduction of a wider ‘failure to prevent economic crime’ offence?
In tackling these questions, the panelists focussed on the three component parts of the Act concerning the Register of Overseas Entities, UWOs and sanctions, together with the attendant overhaul of the Companies House register as set out in the Government’s recently published White Paper.
This interesting and lively panel discussion, superbly chaired by Simon Pentol QC, will help you develop your understanding of the new Act and consider any implications for your clients.
